A scattered pile of window glass, if found near your own car, is a frustrating and infuriating evidence of break-in; in Detroit, they have become known as “Detroit Diamonds.” For the rest of us, these ubiquitous piles are proof of someone else’s misfortune.
It marks, in beautiful jewel-like bits, a specific moment in time, but is left on the street and sidewalks long after the car is moved. The site is both highly charged and also mundane. A simple street sweeping wipes clean the evidence of the event; and perhaps the event itself.
